1. INTRODUCTION TO DESKTOP ADVISOR
-------------------------------
Thank You for trying DeskTop Advisor Version 2.0!!
DeskTop Advisor is a hyperdocument authoring and delivery system.
It is an easy-to-use tool for creating and distributing on-line
documents in hypertext form, with linked images and sound segments.
These hyperdocuments can be electronically browsed for learning,
research, reference, or instant help purposes.
The package includes a TSR shell for popping up over other
applications when needed. The registered version contains an
interrupt-triggered shell with which you can seamlessly integrate
hypertext on-line documentation into applications you develop.
You can use this to make your documentation context-sensitive.
As a registered user, you will have a license to commercially
distribute any DeskTop Advisor runtimes free of royalties, as
long as you notify Ivden Technologies, Inc. in advance in writing.
DeskTop Advisor has been developed by Phil Grenetz and is marketed
by Ivden Technologies, Inc. Although it is copyrighted material,
the DeskTop Advisor runtime browser is distributed as freeware in
the DA-BROWS.ZIP archive file to promote awareness and use of
this electronic publishing technology and to provide access to
the growing base of publicly available hyperdocuments authored
using the DeskTop Advisor system.
For instance, the Philadelphia Area Computer Society (PACS)
Shareware Library Catalog is distributed as a DeskTop Advisor
hyperdocument. Interactive Media resource guides and tutorials
are also available in this form on several BBSs and information
services, e.g., CompuServe: GO MULTIMEDIA.
2. SHAREWARE CONCEPT
-----------------
"Shareware" is a term used to describe a system for distribution of
software. Under the shareware concept, software may be freely
copied and passed along to others, or distributed through bulletin
board systems, shareware distribution companies, etc.
As a recipient of a shareware program, you may use the software for
a short trial period to determine if it meets your needs. If it
does, you pay the registration fee. By paying the fee, you are
granted the right to retain the software for your use. If the
software is not suitable, then you may discard it.
The shareware system provides substantial benefits to the computing
community (of which YOU are a member):
a) You get to try out the software BEFORE you buy it so you know
exactly what you're buying.
b) Shareware is substantially less expensive than most commercial
programs. You don't pay for costly marketing programs and
fancy packaging.
c) You get access to a MUCH broader base of available programs.
Thousands of excellent programs have been written by expert
programmers who would never consider marketing commercially.
Through the concept of shareware, these people make their
programs available to the community. Usually, all they ask in
return is a small fee to reward them for the time and effort
they've put into the program.
The system is based entirely on the honor system, and generally
works quite well. (Most people are honest and wouldn't violate the
trust placed in them by the author of the software.)
Shareware is NOT free software - the author counts on your
integrity. See Why and How to Become a Registered User.
You are encouraged to copy this software and pass it along to
others who may be interested in using it.

6. USAGE NOTES
-----------
AUTHORING
---------
After completing the installation, take some time to browse the
on-line user manual. It is informative and serves as a sample
runtime hyperdocument.
In the authoring environment, a hyperdocument is also called a
'knowledge base'. To learn about the authoring environment,
locate in the DTA directory of the drive on which you installed
the product and enter:
DA AUTHRMAN
When you are finished browsing the on-line manual, enter the
authoring environment by entering:
DTA
Follow the menus and prompts to create a new knowledge base. You
can access the on-line manual from the Help menu. Consult it as
needed throughout the authoring process. Enjoy the experience!!
SOUND SUPPORT (tm)
-------------
DeskTop Advisor incorporates audio technology to enhance the
communication process. Sound Support files are accessible in
the DeskTop Advisor authoring system and the runtime browser. They
are segments of digitally recorded audio narrative intended to augment
the traditional on-line help screens. They are stored in compressed
4-bit format and can be played through your PC's internal speaker or
parallel port device, such as the Covox Speech Thing.
You can also add sound to your own hyperdocuments. See the manual.
